IBS - Irritable Bowel Syndrome
IBS is a digestive disorder of the bowel with symptoms consisting of abdominal cramps, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea or nausea.
Hypnotherapy for IBS helps smooth out the contractions in your intestines, allowing them to return to gentle, natural movements and helps reduce the associated anxiety and stress.
Hypnotherapy is a recommended therapy for IBS. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recently spent over 18 months developing the first guidelines for the NHS in England and Wales. Their report states "hypnotherapyis thought to be useful in helping people with IBS to cope with their symptoms."
In the UK much research into IBS has been undertaken by Professor Peter Whorwell, Professor of Medicine and Gastroenterology in the University of Manchester. With 78% success from his most recent study Professor Whorwell believes hypnotherapy to be an extremely effective treatment for the condition. "IBS is ideal for treatment with hypnosis, as there is no structural damage to the body," explains Professor Whorwell. "During the hypnotherapy, sufferers learn how to influence and gain control of their gut function, and then seem to be able to change the way the brain modulates their gut activity."
